Nicola Pasternak Let them eat cake

Work by Nicola Pasternak

Through Let them eat cake I sought to recreate the ‘sensations’ of food via the tactile and viscous nature of paint. I wanted to explore the artificiality of mass-produced food and Western fixations with perfection through the cakes’ uniformity. My inspiration arose from the conventions of still-life drawing on the works of artists Thiebauld, Oldenburg and Cézanne. I began by taking digital photographs, exploring the artificial nature of cakes, but finally progressed to painting using my digital work as stimulus. I hope audiences respond to my work with both desire and a morbid fascination for their mild vulgarity.
