Syncretism: ‘The combining of different, often seemingly contradictory beliefs, while melding practices of various schools of thought.’

Syncretism documents a performance exploring the role of technology through dualities of old and new, man and woman, East and West. I was inspired by my Japanese heritage, Japan’s ultra-conservative values within an ultra-modern society, and Stelarc’s take on technology as ‘an evolutionary energizer’. Fiona Hall’s use of recontextualised materials particularly resonated with me and informed my practice, from handcrafting my costume out of cables and computer detritus to adhering to Kabuki traditions in choreographing my performance.

Influencing artists: Stelarc, Shaun Gladwell, David Altmejd, Yayoi Kusama, Fiona Hall
