How does an artist’s studio environment impact the way art is made? What can it reveal about an artist’s creative process?

In this learning tour held at the Brett Whiteley Studio in Surry Hills, we analyse the art and life of one of Australia’s most renowned artists in the context of his home and workplace.

Designed to engage students with Whiteley’s art, we unpack works on view in the current exhibition and examine the ephemera, art equipment and unfinished paintings now preserved in the studio. Led by a Gallery educator, students participate in looking, responding and art-making to develop an in-depth understanding of an artist’s practice.
