Teachers on a tour at the Art Gallery of New South Wales

Our learning tours for teachers at the Art Gallery of New South Wales are designed to inspire primary and secondary teachers with new art and ideas.

Led by experienced Gallery educators, they include lively discussion and face-to-face encounters with the Art Gallery’s collection.

We offer two 60-minute themed tours to choose from: Art lives here and burbangana. Following the tour, groups have private access to one of our learning spaces for discussion and planning.

Booking information

A tour can accommodate up to 30 teachers and can be adapted to incorporate our free exhibitions as requested. Learning spaces are subject to group size and availability. Contact our creative learning team to help plan your session, either by emailing education@ag.nsw.gov.au or making a note in your booking request.

Art lives here

What defines a museum collection? How does where an artwork lives influence the way we see it and understand it? In this tour, we unpack key artworks in the Art Gallery’s collection, examine different gallery spaces and discuss strategies for looking at and thinking about art and museum collections. Art lives here is designed to address a range of artistic practices, and to spark curiosity about art and the role of museums.

burbangana

This tour draws on the concept of burbangana, a word from the Aboriginal language of Sydney that inspired the inaugural display in the Art Gallery’s relocated Yiribana Gallery. The tour connects students with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art and its diversity of practice across time, media and styles. Meaning to ’take hold of my hand and help me up’, burbangana is akin to an invitation. It is imbued with generosity and care, and emphasises the connections between people.
