Peter Gardiner North/black lung

62.5 x 272.5 cm

The bush has become a battleground upon which contesting environmental ideologies fight for dominance. Large multinational entities such as mining companies and the fracking industry, which treat the environment as an instrument, are embroiled with ecocentric and often pan-political alliances that advocate a more sustainable relationship with the land, such as the national coalition Lock the Gate.

This monochromatic image, drained of colour, presents an unvarnished reality and speaks to a deeper, more existential foreboding. North/black lung is a reminder of the pervasiveness of history; whatever actions are undertaken now will be our legacy.
